The villagers of Fiji are stewards of some of the world’s most diverse and spectacular reefs. However, these reefs are suffering from the increasing pressures from high temperatures that cause bleaching, storms, the overgrowth of algae, and ecosystem decay. Adopt-a-Coral provides much needed support to resource owners to improve the condition of Fiji’s coral reef ecosystem, which are vital sources of food, cultural items, and provide for the economic needs of communities. By also supporting the development of marine ecotourism, Adopt-a-Coral assists villagers to preserve their culture, educate eco-tourists, sustain their conservation efforts, and provide for their economic needs.
Coral can be planted, and some species grow at surprising rates. The photo of the large white coral head was taken only a year after planting. Adopt-a-Coral plants finger sized coral nubbins that are carefully removed from existing and enduring colonies. Planting selected corals enhances diversity across village Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and will support the development of ecotourism snorkeling trails. The village of Votua on the Coral Coast will be the first to culture and transplant corals as well as conduct snorkeling tours through their village MPA.
For only US$30, Adopt-a-Coral will plant a coral fragment in your name or the name of someone you choose. We will send the recipient an electronic certificate, along with GPS coordinates of the precise location of the planting. The combined planting of selected corals helps restore the diverse and spectacular reefs protected in Fijian village Marine Protected Areas. Someday, you or the recipient of your gift could snorkel, at no cost, with villagers through the very field of coral that your gift helped to create.
Best of all, you will know that your donation will go directly to the village and to the international award winning Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area (FLMMA) Trust Fund, and that the moneys will be used to improve conditions and lives above the water, so that a healthy environment is sustained below the water.
Give a gift of life to the reef, and the village.
